The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT has local operators in all twelve suburbs of the Woden Valley district, from the 1964 streets of Hughes and Curtin to the big blocks of O'Malley and the strata grounds around the Woden Town Centre.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across the Woden Valley, the district of twelve suburbs arranged around the Woden Town Centre in Phillip. Woden was Canberra’s first satellite town, built from 1964 with its own shops, jobs and homes separate from Canberra Central, and the district was formally established in 1966. The National Capital Development Commission planned it for about 55,000 people: work on Hughes and Curtin started in late 1962, Chifley and Lyons followed in 1965, Garran, Pearce, Torrens, Mawson, Farrer and Phillip in 1966, O’Malley in 1973 and Isaacs in 1986. At the 2021 census 39,279 people lived here across 28.6 square kilometres, with the Canberra Hospital in the north of the district, Canberra College, the library and the Woden Youth Centre near the middle, and Weston Creek and Tuggeranong over the district boundaries.
For a mowing operator the useful fact is the age of the place. Almost six in ten Woden Valley homes are still separate houses on the original blocks, and their gardens have had sixty years to grow: the conifer on the Yarra Glen median strip and the row of trees by the southbound off-ramp were once the old Yarra Glen homestead’s garden and windbreak, and plenty of private yards have trees of the same vintage. The other four in ten are townhouses and flats, many of them around the town centre. Add a valley floor on old alluvium, hillsides on volcanic rock under Mount Taylor and Mount Mugga Mugga, and close to one resident in five aged over 65, and you have a district where the same operator might mow a postcode 2606 unit lawn and a sloping half-century garden in the same morning.
Book your free Woden Valley quoteFrom a unit lawn beside Eddison Park to a back yard under Mount Taylor in Chifley, each visit is set for the block and the ground it sits on.
Weekly, fortnightly or monthly through the October-to-April growing season, with edges done on kerbs, paths and beds at every visit. What is included is set out on our lawn mowing and lawn edging pages.
Hughes, Curtin, Lyons, Chifley and the 1966 suburbs carry the district’s oldest trees and heaviest autumn leaf fall. We mow higher under the canopy, clear the leaf so it does not smother the turf, and can bring in tree trimming when a planting has outgrown its corner.
The flats through Phillip, Pearce and Torrens sit on water-laid alluvium that compacts; the slopes toward Mount Taylor and Mount Mugga Mugga are volcanic rhyodacite that drains fast. Coring, top dressing and watering advice change from one to the other.
Around two in five Woden Valley homes are flats or townhouses. Shared lawns, strips beside driveways and common gardens are priced for what they are and kept to a schedule the body corporate can rely on, with the paths, bins and hard surfaces tidied on the same visit.
The district has a long list of churches, the Woden Valley football, rugby league and Australian rules clubs, and light industrial premises in the town centre, all with grass and beds that need to look kept. Our commercial garden maintenance runs to a fixed price and calendar.
Bindii pre-emergent in late May, winter grass picked out of dormant couch, clover on the shaded sides and grubs in a warm February. Our bindii guide covers what we watch for and when.
A Woden Valley garden can be anything from a Curtin front yard planted when the first houses there were advertised at between £6,870 and £8,055, to a courtyard behind a new flat in Phillip. Our operators cover hedging and pruning, weeding, garden clean-ups, mulching and green waste removal from $70 a visit, across all twelve suburbs.
In the older suburbs the work is about scale: hedges that have thickened for decades want a spring shape and a light trim after the summer flush, beds under mature trees need a coarse mulch in October to hold what the spring rain brings, and there is always a corner that has been left too long. In the townhouse and unit estates it is about keeping a small space sharp, with screening plants trimmed off fences and beds weeded before an inspection. For homes changing hands, our pre-sale and end-of-lease gardening gets a Woden Valley block back to presentation standard in one visit. Lawn and garden together, one operator, one booking.

One guide price list covers the whole district, from Hughes to Isaacs, and the operator who visits confirms the figure on site. The Fox Mowing pricing guide has the rest of our services.
| Lawn service | Guide price from | Typical inclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Small maintained lawn — mow, edge & blow | From $50 | Unit lawns, townhouse strips and small front yards anywhere in the district that are already kept short. |
| Medium to large — mow, edges & blow | From $70-$150+ | A standard 1960s family block: mow, edges, whipper snipping under trees and along fences, paths and drive blown clean. |
| Gardening basic visit | From $70 | Hedging, pruning, weeding, bed tidy and green waste removal, sized to the garden in front of us. |
| Overgrown lawn recovery | From $100-$250+ | Grass that has run away over a wet spring or an empty tenancy: multiple passes, catcher work and a full clean-up. |
| Acreage / ride-on / slashing | Quoted on site | Larger O’Malley blocks, club grounds and school ovals that suit ride-on mowing. |
Important: These are Woden Valley starting guide prices. Your final quote depends on lawn size, slope, tree cover, grass height, access and how often you book.
A free look at the block first, because the district runs from a courtyard to a half-acre and the price has to fit the one in front of us.
Operators who live in the valley, not a call centre sending someone from across town.
Our operators are spread from Curtin and Hughes in the north to Farrer and Isaacs in the south, so the person quoting your lawn has mown your suburb’s soil and shade before.
Small maintained lawns from $50, gardening from $70, and the same starting figures in Garran as in Torrens. Bigger jobs are priced to the work, in writing, before we begin.
Every operator is fully insured and police-checked, which matters to the strata managers, church committees and older residents who book us most.
Edges cut, fence lines trimmed and the drive blown clean on every visit, so the block reads as cared for from the street.
Around hospital shifts, school runs on Melrose Drive, inspection dates or a strata calendar. Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or once.
Call 1800 FOX MOW or send the form and a Woden Valley operator calls back the same day. Simple mows are often quoted from the street.
The valley gets a real Canberra winter. Frost sits on the flats from about May to September, the couch and kikuyu lawns that went in with the 1960s houses lose their colour and stop, and only the tall fescue on shaded sides and south-facing blocks keeps growing slowly enough to want a cut. September and October are the wettest months, worth remembering in a district that redesigned its drains after the 1971 Yarra Glen flash flood; we wait for the alluvial ground to dry before coring, then feed the warm-season lawns once the soil passes the mid-teens in mid-October. Summer brings hot north-westerlies and the ACT rule of no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm during daylight saving, so watering moves to early mornings and the mowing height goes up. Autumn is the second flush for fescue and the right window to overseed or lay new turf, with a potassium-rich feed before the first hard frost in late April. Each customer’s round shifts with that calendar rather than running the same interval all year.
We mow right across the Woden Valley — Chifley, Curtin, Farrer, Garran, Hughes, Isaacs, Lyons, Mawson, O’Malley, Pearce, Phillip and Torrens — with Weston Creek, Tuggeranong and Jerrabomberra over the district boundaries, and across the wider Canberra service area. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
Lawn mowing in the Woden Valley starts from $50 for a small lawn that is already maintained, in any of the district's twelve suburbs. A medium to large block with edges and a blow-down is usually $70 to $150+, a gardening visit starts from $70, overgrown lawns are recovery jobs from $100 to $250+, and the big O'Malley blocks that need a ride-on are quoted on site. The operator who comes out confirms the figure on the day, before any work begins.
The Woden Valley district is Chifley, Curtin, Farrer, Garran, Hughes, Isaacs, Lyons, Mawson, O'Malley, Pearce, Phillip and Torrens, and Fox Mowing ACT has local operators in every one of them. The Woden Town Centre sits in Phillip and the Canberra Hospital in the north of the district, and our operators also cross into Weston Creek and Tuggeranong when a customer is just over the line.
Much of the Woden Valley sits on Deakin Volcanics rhyodacite, with water-laid alluvium on the flatter valley floor through Phillip, Pearce and Torrens. In practice the hillside lawns under Mount Taylor and Mount Mugga Mugga drain fast and dry out in a hot westerly, while the flat alluvial lawns hold moisture and compact, so a Woden Valley lawn on the slope needs deep early watering and a higher summer cut, and one on the flat needs coring in October or March.
Yes, that is common work for us across the older Woden Valley suburbs from Hughes and Curtin through to Farrer. A first visit usually means hedges cut back to shape, beds weeded and cleared, mulch laid and the green waste taken away, from $70 for a basic visit and quoted on site for a garden that has been left for years, after which a regular round keeps it that way.
Yes, scheduled mowing and garden upkeep for rental houses, townhouses and unit blocks throughout the Woden Valley is regular work for our operators, and we deal directly with the managing agent if that is easier. Visits can be timed before routine inspections or a change of tenant, and end-of-lease tidy-ups are quoted as a single job.
Call 1800 369 669 or complete the form on this page and a Fox Mowing ACT operator based in the Woden Valley will phone you back the same day. Plain mowing jobs can usually be priced from the street; strata sites and larger gardens get a free on-site look first.
