Jerrabomberra is a Queanbeyan suburb in postcode 2619 and one of the newer ones: the land was John Palmer’s from 1827, was farmed and subdivided for more than a century, and then in February 1988 Jerrabomberra Estates released the first serviced blocks of a master-planned community for between $28,000 and $39,000. The first homes went up that year, the community hall soon after, and the suburb has kept filling in ever since, from 8,747 people in 2006 to 9,601 at the 2021 census. The name comes from a local Aboriginal place name meaning boy frightened by storm.
The suburb has three sections and they mow differently. The Heights sits on the base of Jerrabomberra Mountain, which divides most of the suburb from Queanbeyan, so its blocks slope, drain fast and face the weather. The Park is on the plain to the south, divided from The Heights by Edwin Land Parkway, and runs down to Jerrabomberra Lake, an artificial lake that drains into Jerrabomberra Creek and is dominated by Cove Island with its eight homes. Lakeview and Cassina Rise take the suburb further south. At 617 metres above sea level the whole lot gets Canberra’s frost and clay, and most residents commute to jobs in the capital, which is why fortnightly rounds that happen while you are at work are the standard booking here.
