Karabar is the southern part of Queanbeyan’s built-up area, sitting on the rising ground south of the river with the Queanbeyan River itself as the eastern boundary and Mount Jerrabomberra standing over the whole suburb. It is one of the larger Queanbeyan suburbs, with 8,517 people at the 2021 census, and it is properly self-contained: a shopping centre, netball courts, several ovals, the Queanbeyan Basketball Stadium on Southbar Road, Karabar High School and Distance Education Centre and, over the fence from it, Queanbeyan South Public School.
At around 609 metres above sea level Karabar is a little higher than central Queanbeyan, and the slope changes the mowing. Blocks on the mountain side are tilted, often terraced, and drain fast, so they dry out first in a hot westerly; the lower streets in postcode 2620 towards the river hold clay moisture and frost harder.
