How the year runs on a Royalla block at 800 metres
Royalla’s height gives it the coldest, longest winter on our Queanbeyan-side rounds. Frost can start in late April and hang on into October, hard frosts run through the middle of the year, and there is the occasional dusting of snow on the surrounding hills. Warm-season lawns are dormant for the best part of five months; fescue keeps growing slowly and gets an occasional afternoon cut. Spring arrives late but hard, with the September and October rain driving a flush across every hectare at once, so the first slash needs to be booked for November before the grass seeds. Summer is dry and windy across open country, and a house lawn survives it on deep early-morning watering and a high cut. Autumn is short: we feed in March with a potassium-rich mix, oversow or repair thin patches in April, and get the last big mow done before the frost shuts the season down again.
