What a year does to a Googong lawn
Googong sits higher than Queanbeyan and has almost no mature tree cover yet, so it gets the full version of the Canberra-region year. Frosts start around May and the couch and buffalo lawns switch off and go straw-coloured; hard frosts follow through June, July and August; and the last frost can arrive well into September on open ground. When the soil finally warms past the mid-teens in October the wettest months of the year have already started, and a young lawn can go from dormant to out of control in three weeks. Summer brings hot north-westerlies across a hillside with nothing to slow them, so we mow high, keep the catcher off where we can, and talk to owners about deep watering before 9 am. Autumn is when we fertilise with a potassium-rich feed and, on lawns that never really took, lay fresh turf or top dress before the frosts return in late April.
