A Queanbeyan year, from frost hollow to heatwave
Queanbeyan’s climate is the same cool, oceanic pattern as Canberra’s, and the river flats make it a touch colder still. Frosts arrive around May and hang on until September, warm-season lawns shut down and turn straw, and the only cutting through July is the odd tall fescue that will not stop. The spring rain peak in September and October wakes everything at once; by mid-October the soil is finally warm enough to feed couch and kikuyu, and by late November it is warm enough to lay new turf on a patch that did not survive winter. Summer brings 28-degree January averages, mid-30s heatwaves and dry westerlies that hit the open blocks hardest. Then March and April give a second flush, and a potassium-rich feed before the late-April frosts sets the lawn up for the next round. Our operators move each customer’s interval with that cycle instead of running one interval all year.
