A village of old cottages between two rivers
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Oaks Estate, the roughly 40-hectare village in the District of Jerrabomberra that sits on the ACT side of the border, hard up against Queanbeyan. It is bounded by the Molonglo River to the north, the Queanbeyan River to the east, the old property called The Oaks to the west and the Queanbeyan–Cooma railway to the south, and it is 12 kilometres from the centre of Canberra. The first residential allotments were auctioned in 1887, a few months after the Queanbeyan railway station opened next door, which makes Oaks Estate older than the capital itself and one of the few ACT places with a name that runs back to colonial days. The streets say so: Florence Street for John Bull’s daughter, George Street for George Tompsitt who bought the wool-scouring works, Hazel Street for the Hazelbrook Works, River Street because it leads to the Molonglo.
About 330 people live here in Oaks Estate 2620, in a mix of older cottages and ACT Government public housing, alongside storage, warehousing, metal fabrication and a liquor retailer, with horse holding paddocks, saleyards, the council city nursery, an allotment garden and a sportsground filling the rest. The blocks are modest and the lawns are old, mostly couch and kikuyu on the flats above the rivers, and under them is Ordovician rock of the Pittman formation — chert, phyllite and sandstone — at 583 metres. It is a small place with a lot of history, and the yards suit a straightforward, regular cut by someone who knows the village.
