Lawn care for Canberra’s oldest and densest suburb
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Kingston, Canberra’s oldest suburb and one of its most densely populated. It began as Eastlake, the workers’ quarter built while Forrest was reserved for senior public servants, and takes its name from Charles Cameron Kingston, a minister in the first Commonwealth government. The Kingston Powerhouse of 1915 was the city’s first permanent public building, the Old Bus Depot Markets fill the former ACTION depot on Sundays, and the Foreshore along Lake Burley Griffin has turned old industrial land into rows of apartments. About four kilometres from the city centre, at 563 metres above sea level, postcode 2604, with 6,579 people counted in 1.31 square kilometres at the 2021 census. Not to be confused with same-named places elsewhere in Australia.
The census tells the mowing story: more than ninety per cent of Kingston’s dwellings are flats, units or apartments and only three per cent are separate houses. So most of our work here is shared grounds, courtyards and strata frontages, with the detached houses concentrated in the three heritage-protected blocks of the Kingston/Griffith Garden City precinct around Dawes, Howitt and Cunningham Streets and the brick-veneer cottages at the Causeway. Even Green Square at the shops has a lawn history: its exotic grass died in the drought years, was replaced with spiky natives, and was put back in 2014 after a long local campaign.
