How a Pialligo year runs on the river flats
Pialligo is flat, open and close to water, and its lawns behave accordingly. Winter frosts from May to September settle hard on low ground near the Molonglo and Woolshed Creek, so the couch and kikuyu go brown early and stay brown late, while any tall fescue keeps ticking over. The spring rain peak in September and October hits the alluvial soil and everything grows at once — this is when we feed the maintained lawns and start the acreage rounds. By December the westerlies have dried the river-laid soil right out, and a lawn that is not deep-watered before 9 am under the daylight-saving rules will go straw-coloured in a week. Autumn is the second growth flush and the right time to top dress and repair the worn areas around gates and sheds before the frosts return. We change the interval with the season instead of running the same fortnight all year.
