Red Hill seasons, from the first frost to the last
Frost defines Red Hill. At 634 metres the first frosts arrive in May, the hard ones run June to August, and the last can be later than mid-September; couch, kikuyu and buffalo lawns go straw-coloured and stop for the duration, while fescue keeps a slow green growth and needs an occasional winter cut. We stay off frosted turf and do not force growth until the soil has warmed, which up here can be after mid-October. Spring rain peaks in September and October and, once the red soil warms, growth is quick and the first hedge trim is due. Summer brings mid-30s heatwaves and hot north-westerlies over the ridge, so we cut higher, water deeply before 9am within the ACT daylight-saving rules and core the compacted red ground. Autumn is short: feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser by mid-April, top dress and repair worn patches, and get the leaves up before the frosts return.
