Symonston is not a normal suburb. Gazetted in 1928 and named after Sir Josiah Symon, one of the framers of the Australian Constitution, it has always been treated by the planners as a broadacre area — rural in character, with a handful of larger institutions dropped into it. Geoscience Australia has its headquarters here, the Australian Defence Force holds land, and the historic Mugga-Mugga homestead and the Mugga Lane solar farm are both within the suburb. What it does not have is many houses, and there is no 2021 population figure worth quoting.

At 583 metres the ground is mostly dark grey volcanic tuff under a thin skin of soil, so it dries out fast in a westerly and grows weeds rather than grass wherever it is left alone.
