Fox Mowing ACT mows and maintains grounds right across Fyshwick, the retail and light industrial suburb east of the South Canberra district. Fyshwick is where Canberra goes for car yards, furniture and hardware, wholesalers, the Canberra Outlet Centre and the Fresh Food Markets, and its streets carry the names of Australian industrial towns: Isa Street, Townsville Street, Newcastle Street, Ipswich Street, Gladstone Street. The only railway line into Canberra cuts the suburb in half, with Ipswich and Newcastle Streets and the Monaro Highway crossing it. The suburb is named after Sir Philip Fysh, a Tasmanian politician who helped bring about Federation, with the Old English suffix ‘wick’ meaning dwelling place.
At 9.76 square kilometres Fyshwick 2609 is big and almost entirely commercial, so our work here is different from the rest of the inner south. It is nature strips in front of showrooms, lawn strips beside car parks, verges along warehouse fences, vacant lots that need slashing and the grounds of trade premises that want a tidy street presence. There is also a small residential pocket near the markets that we mow like any other home. Fyshwick’s first streets were the service roads of the 1918 Molonglo camp, and the ground under most of the north is calcareous shale with river gravels along Jerrabomberra Creek, which drains well and dries out fast in summer.
