The suburb was gazetted in 1928 and takes its name from Robert Campbell, whose Duntroon station once covered this ground; the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy still sit inside it, as do the Australian War Memorial and the Campbell Park Offices. It is a big suburb by inner north standards, 6.4 square kilometres in the 2612 postcode with 6,564 residents at the 2021 census, and it is not flat. The streets, most of them named for military figures such as Patey, Derrick, Savige and Vasey Crescent, climb away from Anzac Parade toward the reserve.
That terrain is what shapes the mowing. Most of Campbell sits on the lowest layer of the Ainslie Volcanics, a grey dacite that gives the upper blocks thin, stony ground that drains fast and dries out first in a hot spell, while a band of old river gravel lies around Anzac Parade. Blocks on Getting Crescent and the streets behind Vasey Crescent back straight on to patchy bushland, so grass and weeds seed in from the reserve and the fire-season tidy matters. In the centre of the suburb the housing shifts to medium-density flats with shared lawns. Daley Park on Ferdinand Street, with its mature native trees and open lawn, is a fair picture of the local style: natives over exotics, and turf that has to cope with dry ground.
