Two kinds of ground on one hillside suburb
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens throughout Hackett, about 4.5 kilometres north-east of the city, where the inner north runs out against the Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Hackett was gazetted in 1960, is named after Sir John Winthrop Hackett, a newspaper editor who worked for Federation, and its streets carry the names of scientists: Madigan, Maitland, Richards, Selwyn and Skeats were all geologists, Rivett a chemist, Mackenzie an anatomist. The geologists would have appreciated the ground under their streets. The lower, western side of the suburb sits on Quaternary alluvium over the Canberra Formation shale, the same limestone-country base as Dickson next door; the higher eastern side sits on grey dacite, the lowest layer of the Ainslie Volcanics.
For a mowing operator that is the whole story of the 2602 postcode’s easternmost suburb. Lawns on the lower streets hold water, compact and grow fast in spring. Lawns up toward the reserve are thin over stone, drain in hours and burn off first in a hot westerly. At 609 metres the suburb centre is higher than Dickson or Downer, and the blocks are a full sixty years old, so most of the grass is original couch or kikuyu with fescue in the shade. Hackett has a neighbourhood oval and its own small shops, and a strong community association; it is a settled place where people notice a tidy verge.
