Dickson through the year on level, water-holding ground
Dickson’s flat alluvial ground sets the pace. In September and October, the wettest months, it stays soft for days after rain, so the first spring cuts are set high and coring waits until the soil has drained and warmed past the mid-teens in mid-October, which is also when the couch and kikuyu get their first feed. Summer brings the hot north-westerlies; with fewer big trees on the rebuilt western side, those lawns are mown higher and watered deeply before 9 am under the ACT daylight-saving rules, while the leafy central streets hold moisture better. Autumn is the second flush, the right time for a potassium feed before the late-April frosts and for the leaf clean-up under the older trees. Winter is dormant and often frosty on open, level ground; couch goes straw-coloured, fescue keeps ticking over, and we stay off frozen turf. Worn or thin patches, common on rental lawns, are best re-turfed from late November once the soil is warm, or overseeded with fescue in April.
