Watson lawns, season by season
Watson’s position at the top of the inner north, slightly higher and more open than the streets south of it, makes the seasons a little sharper. The May-to-September frosts send couch and kikuyu on the sunny blocks dormant, and only tall fescue in the shadier 1960s yards keeps growing and wanting the odd cut. Spring is wet, with September and October the year’s wettest months, and the older lawns on heavy ground stay soft into October before the soil warms enough for the first feed. Summer along the Federal Highway edge is dry and windy, and the newer, low-tree courtyards heat up fastest, so deep watering before 9 am under the ACT daylight-saving rules is what keeps them green. Autumn brings the leaf drop on the original streets and the window for re-turfing or repairing patches before the late-April frosts. We shift every customer’s interval with the season rather than mowing to a fixed date.
