Settlement started with the Blandfordia 5 Precinct south-west of Manuka in 1926 and 1927; in 1928 southern Blandfordia was renamed Griffith after Sir Samuel Griffith, the first Chief Justice of the High Court, and the northern part became Forrest. Streets are named after explorers, several were laid out to Walter Burley Griffin’s original designs, and the suburb covers about three square kilometres at 587 metres above sea level. This is Griffith in postcode 2603, not to be confused with same-named places elsewhere in Australia.
Griffith has twenty parks covering nearly twelve per cent of its area, and the trees ringing Griffith Oval No. 1 on Captain Cook Crescent were planted between the 1930s and the 1950s. That tree cover is what defines lawn care here: heavy autumn leaf fall, shaded patches, and older couch and kikuyu lawns on 1920s and 1930s blocks that have been mowed for the better part of a century.
