Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Hume, the light-industrial suburb on the south-east edge of Canberra where the ACT meets the District of Jerrabomberra in New South Wales. Hume is named after the explorer Hamilton Hume, its streets are named after Australian industrialists and businessmen, and it is one of the city’s three light-industrial areas alongside Fyshwick and Mitchell. There is no significant housing here. The 2021 census counted 395 residents, up from six in 2006, and almost all of that rise is the Alexander Maconochie Centre, so the lawns that matter in Hume 2620 belong to factories, warehouses, yards and depots, not to houses.
That makes Hume a different kind of job from a family suburb. The work is frontages that face the road, nature strips that the business is expected to keep tidy, shared driveways and common areas in strata industrial estates, and vacant or undeveloped lots that need slashing before the grass gets away. The ground is Deakin Volcanics — cream and purple rhyodacite in the south, tuff, ashstone and sandstone to the north-east — and at 595 metres with next to no tree cover the suburb is exposed to every westerly and every frost.
