Winter arrives on Gilmore’s high ground in May and does not let go until September. The couch and kikuyu lawns go straw-coloured and stop, which is normal, while fescue on the shaded, south-facing sides keeps growing slowly and wants a cut on the odd dry day. Spring brings the wettest weeks of the year, and once the stony ground warms past 14 degrees in mid-October the lawn wakes fast: that is when we core, feed and top dress the worn tracks. Summer is where the hill shows its hand. The north-westerlies dry an exposed Gilmore lawn in a day, so deep watering before 9 am inside the daylight-saving rules, a wetting agent and a higher cut are what keep the colour in. Autumn is the second growth flush and the window to overseed a fescue lawn or lay new turf on a section that has given up, with a potassium feed before the frost returns in late April.
