One of Tuggeranong’s smallest suburbs, and one of its hilliest
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Macarthur, a compact 1.27 square kilometre suburb of about 1,405 people, wedged between Fadden and Gilmore just north of Isabella Drive. It was gazetted in 1982 and first settled in 1983, named after John Macarthur of Merino wool fame, and its streets follow the wool theme — Jackie Howe Crescent and Merriman Crescent among them. Before the houses went up, the undulating loop of Coyne Street, Jackie Howe Crescent, Merriman Crescent and Carson Street was the Macarthur Park motorcycle circuit, raced from 1978 to 1982, and a sign in the pines still tells the story.
That word undulating is what matters for lawns. Macarthur backs onto Wanniassa Hills, part of Canberra Nature Park, so a lot of its blocks slope, some quite steeply, and the ground is volcanic rhyolite that drains fast and dries out in summer. Blocks are 1980s family size, the population is small and settled with a median age of 39, and there is even a horse holding paddock in the suburb.
