Why a Conder lawn runs on its own calendar
The Canberra seasons all arrive in Conder, but the valley shifts their timing. Frost settles early on the alluvial floor, often in May, and hangs on later than the mid-September average the rest of the city works to, so the warm-season lawns here sleep longer and the first spring feed waits until the soil is properly warm. When spring does come it comes with the wettest weeks of the year, and buffalo that looked dead in August is growing hard by the end of October. Summer is the test for the newer hill blocks: little shade, a westerly afternoon and fast-draining volcanic ground mean deep watering before 9 am, a higher cut and a watchful eye for heat stress through January. Autumn is the second flush, the right time to repair worn patches, and the last window to lay new turf before the ground cools. The first hard frost can be back in Conder by late April, so the autumn feed goes on early.
