One suburb, two very different kinds of lawn
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Bonython, the long, narrow suburb wrapped around the eastern and northern sides of Mount Stranger, a kilometre or two from the Tuggeranong Town Centre. It was gazetted in October 1986, nearly became “Stranger” before the planners settled on Sir John Langdon Bonython’s name, and the first houses went up in 1989 on what had been grazing land with scattered eucalypts. The streets are named for prominent South Australians and their districts and rivers, and the Bonython Primary School on Hurtle Avenue opened in 1992.
The lawns split into two kinds. On the hill side, older family blocks sit on rhyolite that rises about 100 metres above the valley floor, so they drain fast and dry out in a westerly. Down by Lower Stranger Pond, the West Bonython release built between 2007 and 2010 added around 800 homes, a mix of apartments, units, courtyard homes and standalone houses, with the small lawns to match. Add the mature trees the suburb is now known for and a nature reserve running down to the Murrumbidgee on the western side, and an operator in the 2905 postcode needs to be as comfortable with a leaf-strewn courtyard as with a half-acre of kikuyu on a slope.
