The newest industrial estate in the ACT, kept tidy from the kerb
Fox Mowing ACT is the local team that mows and maintains grounds in Beard, the small light-industrial suburb in the District of Jerrabomberra that lies between Fyshwick and Oaks Estate, immediately north of the New South Wales border and the city of Queanbeyan, about 9 kilometres east of Canberra City. Timothy Beard, the ex-convict who was the first recorded European settler in the Queanbeyan area, gives the suburb its name, and the streets are named after minerals. Until 1942 this was pastoral land; the Commonwealth abattoir operated here from 1944 until 1997; and after a 2004 study looked at a housing estate called Griffin Green, the ACT Government chose industrial use instead to relieve a shortage of small industrial lots on both sides of the border. The first lots went to market as the Fyshwick East Industrial Estate in 2009, the name Beard was gazetted that May, and both names are still used when the land is sold.
Nearly all of Beard 2620 is that one estate, and its grounds are young. The turf out the front of each workshop has all been laid on freshly cut ground since 2009, the screening shrubs are still filling out, several lots are yet to be built on, and there is no established tree cover between the buildings and the rivers to the north and east. At 593 metres and wide open to the weather, it frosts hard, dries out fast and compacts under trucks and foot traffic, so a Beard frontage needs a different approach from a settled suburban lawn.
