Lyons sits at just under 600 metres, and the slopes on the Oakey Hill side change how the seasons land. Frosts run from about May to September and hard ones through June, July and August; the couch and kikuyu lawns go straw-coloured and stop, while fescue on the shaded south sides keeps growing slowly and needs a cut now and then. The lower ground in the centre, on shale, holds winter wet longer; the hill blocks drain fast and dry out first in summer. The wettest months are September and October, the soil passes 14 degrees around mid-October, and that is when the first feed goes down and the regular rounds start. Summer brings hot north-westerlies and the ACT water rules, no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm in daylight saving, so we cut higher and water deep before 9 am. Late summer is the last window for warm-season turf on a rebuild; autumn is for top dressing, overseeding fescue in April and a potassium feed before the cold sets in.
