What the seasons do to a Hughes lawn
Hughes sits at 592 metres with mature trees over much of it, so shade is as big a factor as cold. Frosts run from about May to September and the couch and kikuyu lawns on the sunny fronts go straw-coloured and stop, while the fescue on the shaded sides and under the canopy keeps going slowly and wants a light cut. Autumn leaf drop is heavy from April into June and needs clearing or the grass underneath rots. September and October bring the year’s heaviest rain, the soil warms past 14 degrees in mid-October and the growing season begins, with the first feed for warm-season lawns and fortnightly rounds. Summer is hot, dry and windy, and the ACT water rules apply, no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm in daylight saving; the sloping blocks with the views dry out fastest. Late summer is the last window for warm-season turf, and autumn is for top dressing, overseeding fescue in April and a potassium feed before the frosts.
