How a Curtin lawn behaves through the year
Curtin’s 587 metres puts it a little lower than the ridge suburbs on the southern side of the valley, but winter is still winter. Frosts from May to September stop the couch and kikuyu dead, and the lawns on the creek side of the suburb, where cold air settles, tend to brown off first and green up last. Fescue lawns under the big trees hold their colour but need a light cut through the cold months. Spring comes with the wettest weather of the year in September and October, and by mid-October the soil is warm enough for the first proper feed and for weekly rounds to start. Summer is hot north-westerlies and no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm under the ACT water rules, so we mow higher and encourage deep watering before breakfast. Autumn is the second growth flush, the time for repairs and top dressing, an April overseed for fescue and a potassium feed before the frosts return.
