Big blocks on the edge of the old forest
Fox Mowing ACT mows and slashes across Stromlo, the district on the western edge of Weston Creek and the Molonglo Valley that takes in Mount Stromlo and the land that was, until 2003, the Stromlo pine plantation. The observatory on the mountain was established in 1924, with observations up there as early as 1911; it and the plantation burnt in February 1952, and both were destroyed again in the January 2003 bushfires. The district itself was only gazetted in 1996. In 2009 Stromlo Forest Park opened on the old forest ground as a recreation precinct, and the Bushfire Memorial nearby was opened on 18 January 2005.
Stromlo is not a suburb of streets and courtyards. It has few residents, a handful of rural blocks and institutions, and a lot of open grass, all in postcode 2611. That shapes the work: house yards around a homestead, long paddock grass, verges and grounds for the organisations based here, and the slashing that keeps it all in check before summer. We are honest about it — most Stromlo jobs are quoted on site after an operator has walked the ground.
