The first suburb in Weston Creek, and the lawns that came with it
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Waramanga, the suburb of 2,785 people that was gazetted in June 1968 as the first of the Weston Creek suburbs, on paddocks that a 1950s map still shows as Weston, Track, Brown Hill and Oakey Hill. It was named after the Warumungu people of Central Australia and its streets after Australian Aboriginal people, from Nemarang Crescent, where Arawang Primary and the preschool sit, to Namatjira Drive and Badimara Street on the Mount Taylor side. The busy local shops sit on the corner of Damala Street and Waramanga Place, and pedestrian parkland runs along the ridge through the centre of the suburb.
Being the oldest means Waramanga’s lawns and gardens have had the longest to grow, and the ridge means a lot of them slope. Around one in five homes is a townhouse, terrace or semi-detached, so the work in Waramanga 2611 runs from a strip of couch beside a driveway to a full family block with a fall on it and fifty-year-old trees on the fence line. The ground underneath is green-grey, red and purple rhyodacite, shallow and quick to dry on the high side, and our operators set the cut for the slope, the shade and the grass in front of them.
