A Duffy year: young lawns, old lawns and a hot western edge
Duffy’s seasons are Canberra’s, but the suburb feels the summer end harder than most because the westerlies come straight over Narrabundah Hill with nothing to slow them. Frosts run from May into September; the old couch and kikuyu go dormant and brown, the fescue on rebuilt and shaded blocks keeps growing slowly and gets a cut every few weeks. The wet weeks of September and October wake everything up, and mid-October, once the soil holds above 14 degrees, is when we feed the warm-season lawns and put down the summer grass pre-emergent. From November the job on the exposed blocks is water and height: two or three deep soaks a week before 9 am, and the mower set high so the grass shades its own roots. Autumn is for feeding the fescue, overseeding thin patches and, on a lawn that never really recovered, laying new turf while the ground is still warm.
