The Holder year, from a late frost in the hollow to a hot westerly on the edge
Holder gets Canberra’s seasons with the volume turned up at both ends. Because the suburb is low, the frosts from May to September settle hardest in the hollows and the last one can come late in September; couch and kikuyu go dormant and brown while fescue on the shaded side keeps growing and gets the odd cut. September and October are the wettest months, and on Holder’s heavy, slow-draining ground that means waiting until the soil is properly warm in mid-October before we core, feed and lay the pre-emergent. Summer flips the problem: the blocks along Dixon Drive face the open land towards Stromlo and take the hot westerlies straight on, so we mow high and water deeply two or three mornings a week before 9 am. Autumn brings the second growth flush, the potassium feed before the late-April frosts and the best window for new turf on a lawn that has given up.
