A suburb barely a decade old, and lawns to match
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Wright, the Molonglo Valley suburb wedged between Coombs, Holder, Duffy and Denman Prospect at about 580 metres above sea level. Wright is named for Judith Wright, the poet, environmentalist and Aboriginal land rights advocate, and it is young: the first house was finished in June 2012, and by the 2016 census 2,753 people were living in 1,262 dwellings on 1.3 square kilometres. That density tells you what the lawns are like — front strips, courtyards, narrow back yards and shared strata turf, in postcode 2611.
What is under those lawns matters as much as their size. Wright sits on Deakin Volcanics rhyodacite, rock around 414 million years old, with little depth of soil over it, and the builder-laid buffalo on top drains fast and dries faster. There is not much canopy yet either, so the western sun and the hot dry winds from November get straight in.
