Mawson was gazetted in 1966, named after the Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, and its streets follow the same polar theme. The suburb sits 615 metres above sea level on Deakin Volcanics rhyodacite rather than the deep clay of Canberra’s northern plains, and most of its homes went up in the years around Mawson Primary School opening on Ainsworth Street in 1968. That makes for lawns with history: couch and kikuyu that have been mown for the better part of six decades, gardens with real tree cover, and the odd patch a previous owner reseeded with fescue to keep the winter green.
