Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Pearce, one of the Woden Valley suburbs opened in 1966 and named for Sir George Pearce, the longest-serving senator and minister in Australia’s federal history. Pearce runs from Beasley Street in the south to a green corridor shared with Chifley in the north, with Melrose and Athllon Drives on the east and the Mount Taylor nature reserve rising on the west. Long before the houses, this was part of Walter Eddison’s soldier-settlement lease, the Yamba property that once covered Pearce and Torrens. Today it is a suburb of 1.7 square kilometres, 640 metres above sea level, with three schools, a shopping centre and a neighbourhood oval in the middle of it.
The ground tells the story of how a lawn behaves here. The northern half of Pearce sits on Deakin Volcanics rhyodacite, the southern half on Quaternary alluvium, and the upper streets under Mount Taylor climb onto rhyolite. In practice that means the flatter southern blocks hold water and pack down, while the upper blocks drain fast and cook in a hot westerly.
