Phillip was gazetted on 12 May 1966 and named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales; its streets take their names from the First, Second and Third Fleets. It is a suburb of flats more than houses. Of the 5,197 people counted in 2021, up from 1,689 five years earlier, 67 per cent lived in flats and nearly all the rest in townhouses or terraces, and more apartments are going up. Lawn care here is mostly strata lawn care: shared grounds, verge strips, small courtyards and the odd larger garden around an older townhouse block.
