How the seasons treat a Torrens lawn
Torrens sits at the cold southern end of the valley with bush on two sides, and the frost settles on the flat. From about May the couch and kikuyu lawns go straw-coloured and stop, our visits stretch out to a monthly tidy or pause altogether, and only the fescue patches want a cut. September brings the wettest weeks of the year and a slow green-up; the alluvial ground stays soft, so we hold off coring until the soil has dried and warmed in October, then feed the warm-season lawns once it passes the mid-teens. Summer is afternoon sun and hot north-westerlies, with the ACT rule of no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm in daylight saving, so deep watering before breakfast does the work. Late February is when grubs and army worm show up in the older lawns. Autumn gives one more growth flush and the window to lay new turf or repair the bare patches before the late-April frosts shut the season down.
