The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT's operators cover every journalist-named street in McKellar, from the blocks around William Palmer Park to the homes off Dumas Street and William Webb Drive.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across McKellar, a compact 1.4 square kilometre suburb named after Colin McKellar, Minister for Repatriation from 1964 to 1970. The name was gazetted on 15 January 1974 and the suburb was built out over the following decade, with streets named for journalists and Dumas Street as the main road. It is bounded by Ginninderra Drive, William Webb Drive, Owen Dixon Drive and Gundaroo Drive, and its centrepiece is McKellar Oval in William Palmer Park, with a wide view that takes in Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain and Mount Majura. The McKellar Park football ground sits in the north-east corner.
The local shops closed in 2012 and were demolished, so this is a quiet residential suburb of late-1970s and 80s houses on standard blocks, sitting at about 603 metres. The lawns are mostly couch and kikuyu of that vintage, with fescue where owners have wanted winter green, and the open, high position means they get plenty of sun and plenty of wind. Our operators live and work in the 2617 postcode and mow McKellar in the same round as Lawson, Evatt and Giralang.

Fortnightly rounds October to April, monthly or as-needed in winter, with edges and a blow-down. Our lawn mowing and lawn edging pages list what a McKellar visit covers.
McKellar’s high position gives it views and exposure. Lawns dry quickly in a hot north-westerly, so we mow higher in summer and time watering advice for the 9 am cut-off.
Forty-year-old couch on clay runs out of steam. A programme of fertilising from mid-October and again in February, plus soil conditioning with gypsum and organic matter, does more than any mower can.
Clover, dandelion and cape weed colonise thin older lawns. Our clover and weed control pages explain the treatments and timing.
A block that has grown out over a January away or a busy autumn is cut back in stages, catcher on, and put back on a schedule.
The nature strips and park-side frontages of McKellar are part of what makes the suburb look cared for. We include the verge in the round when you want it.
McKellar gardens are a generation younger than the 1960s suburbs south of Belconnen Way but still well established: hedges that need serious hedging and pruning, shrubs that have outgrown their beds, and the odd deciduous tree that fills the gutters in May. Our operators do all of that, plus weeding, mulching and garden clean-ups, from $70 a visit with green waste removed.
Because the suburb is small and quiet, a lot of our McKellar customers are long-term owners who want the whole block kept as it always has been, on a schedule, without having to think about it. Others are agents booking pre-sale or end-of-lease tidy-ups for rentals near the park. Either way, one operator does lawn and garden together.

On an open, high block the year is felt in full. Winter frosts from May to September bite hard on McKellar’s exposed lawns, and near-zero nights turn couch and kikuyu straw-coloured; fescue lawns keep growing slowly and want a cut now and then. September and October bring the wettest weeks and the spring green-up, and by mid-October the soil is warm enough for the first feed and for coring the compacted clay. Summer arrives with hot north-westerlies and the January maximum around 28.5 degrees, so sunny McKellar lawns need two or three deep waterings a week before 9 am and a higher cut. Autumn is the second flush and the right time for repairs and top dressing or new turf before the first hard frost in late April.
We mow right across Belconnen — McKellar, Lawson, Evatt, Giralang, Bruce, Florey, Flynn, Fraser, Cook, Aranda, Charnwood and Dunlop among them — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
McKellar lawn mowing starts from $50 for a small, regularly maintained lawn. A standard block with edges and a blow-down is usually $70 to $150+, a basic gardening visit is from $70, and an overgrown lawn is quoted as a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local Fox Mowing ACT operator confirms the price on site.
Because McKellar sits on an open rise at about 603 metres with little to block the hot north-westerly winds, so lawns lose moisture faster than sheltered blocks nearer the lake. Mowing higher, watering deeply before 9 am two or three times a week and improving the clay with gypsum and organic matter all help the lawn hold on through January.
Twice a year for couch, kikuyu or buffalo: from mid-October once the soil has warmed, and again in February. Fescue lawns in McKellar are fed in mid-September and again in March or April before the first hard frosts. A potassium-rich autumn feed toughens the lawn for winter.
Yes. Hedging, pruning, weeding, mulching and bed clean-ups in McKellar start from $70 a visit, with the green waste taken away, and almost every customer has them done in the same booking as the mow.
Yes. We run scheduled mowing and garden upkeep for McKellar rentals, work with the property manager or landlord on invoicing, and can add an end-of-lease clean-up when tenants move on. As long as we can reach the lawn, nobody needs to be home.
Ring 1800 369 669 or complete the form on this page and a Fox Mowing ACT operator based near McKellar will call you back the same day. A regular mow can often be priced from the street; garden work is walked through first.
