The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT keeps the 1970s family blocks of Evatt in order, from the streets around the three primary schools to the edges along Copland Drive and Ginninderra Drive.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Evatt, a suburb that was gazetted on 2 November 1972 and has been growing lawns ever since. Long before the houses, this ground was Glebe Farm, 81 hectares given to the Anglican church in 1861 to support the little St Paul’s church and school on the corner now marked by Copland Drive, Moynihan Street and Sharwood Crescent. Grazing country then, family blocks now, and at 610 metres above sea level it gets every one of Canberra’s frosts and every one of its hot westerlies.
The suburb is named for Herbert Vere Evatt, High Court justice and Opposition leader, and its streets for people connected with parliament and the law. It sits between McKellar, Belconnen, Florey, Melba and Spence, boxed in by Copland Drive, Owen Dixon Drive, William Webb Drive and Ginninderra Drive, with three neighbourhood ovals and three primary schools, Evatt, Miles Franklin and St Monica’s. Lawns in postcode 2617 are mostly original 1970s couch and kikuyu, now with fifty years of thatch, tree roots and foot traffic in them, and knowing how to handle that is most of the job.
Book your free Evatt quoteBetween the South West Evatt Oval and the streets off William Webb Drive, our visits are set up for old warm-season turf on heavy Belconnen ground.
Fortnightly or monthly rounds from October to April with edges along kerbs, paths and beds, and a slower winter schedule once the couch shuts down. See the lawn mowing and lawn edging pages for what is included.
Fifty-year-old kikuyu builds a spongy thatch layer that scalps if you cut it low and holds disease if you leave it. We mow it at a steady height, dethatch when it needs it and keep the runners out of the beds and off the paths.
Evatt sits on the heavier Belconnen ground that sets hard in summer and puddles in winter. Coring in October or March, gypsum and a top dressing get roots and air back into it; brown patches on hard ground are usually compaction, not drought.
The trees planted in the 1970s now shade a lot of back yards, and the couch has thinned out under them. Tall fescue mown at 50 mm or higher is the practical replacement, and it keeps its colour through winter.
A kikuyu lawn left through a wet October can be ankle-deep in a fortnight and knee-deep in a month. We cut it back in stages with the catcher on, clear the lot and get it back on a normal round, with the price agreed first.
Warm-season grass in Evatt needs a potassium-rich feed in March or April to harden it before the late-April frosts, and a second feed from mid-October once the soil has warmed. We time both for you.
Evatt gardens were planted in the 1970s and many of them have been in the same hands ever since, so the work is about keeping mature plantings in shape rather than starting new ones: bringing hedges back to a manageable size, thinning shrubs that have outgrown their beds, clearing the corner that has gone feral behind the shed. Our operators do hedging and pruning, bed weeding, garden clean-ups and green waste removal from $70 a visit.
Kikuyu runners are the standing enemy of an Evatt garden bed, and an edge cut with a proper blade plus a good depth of mulch does more to hold them back than any spray. Beds on clay also want organic matter worked in before summer rather than after it. When a family home here goes on the market after decades, we do the pre-sale tidy that makes an old garden look loved instead of tired, and we keep it that way through the campaign.

An old lawn tells its own story, so we look before we price.
Operators based in and around Evatt, McKellar and Melba, who have mowed plenty of 1970s kikuyu.
The person quoting your lawn already works Evatt, McKellar, Melba, Spence and Giralang, and knows which streets sit on the hardest clay.
From $50 for a small kept lawn and $70 for a garden visit, with bigger, thatchier or neglected jobs quoted to what is there.
Every Fox Mowing ACT operator is fully insured and police-checked, so long-time residents and their families can book with confidence.

Standing rounds, one-off catch-ups or a seasonal plan, timed around school drop-offs at Miles Franklin or St Monica’s.

At 610 metres with open ground all around, Evatt gets a proper winter: the kikuyu and couch turn straw-coloured after the first May frosts and sit there until October, and a couch lawn that looks dead in July is simply asleep. The tall fescue that has crept in under the trees keeps growing slowly and wants a cut every few weeks. September and October bring the wettest weeks of the year onto clay that has only just warmed past 14 degrees, and the old kikuyu then grows faster than anything else in the district. Summer on this heavy ground is about compaction as much as heat; we mow higher, keep watering deep and early under the ACT daylight-saving rules, and core in March if the surface has set. Autumn is the second flush and the moment to feed with potassium before the frosts, and to re-turf or overseed any patch the summer beat, before late April closes the window.
We mow right across Belconnen — Evatt, McKellar, Melba, Spence, Florey, Giralang, Nicholls, Belconnen, Bruce, Cook, Aranda and Charnwood — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
A small, well-kept Evatt lawn starts from $50. The typical 1970s family block, front and back with edges and a blow-down, runs $70 to $150+, gardening visits start from $70, and kikuyu that has got away over summer is quoted as a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local operator confirms the price at the property before starting.
Most often it is compaction, not thirst. Evatt sits on the heavier Belconnen clay, and fifty years of foot traffic on a 1970s lawn leaves the surface set hard so water runs off instead of soaking in. Coring in October or March, a dose of gypsum and a thin top dressing open the soil up again, and deep watering two or three times a week before 9 am does more than a light sprinkle every night.
That is thatch. Kikuyu that has been growing in Evatt since the 1970s builds a thick layer of dead stems above the soil, so the mower wheels sink and the blade cuts into it. The fix is dethatching in spring, keeping the mowing height steady rather than cutting low occasionally, and feeding in October and February so the grass grows through the layer instead of on top of it.
Yes. Hedge trimming, pruning, weeding, keeping kikuyu runners out of the beds, mulching and green waste removal are all part of an Evatt gardening visit from $70, and most customers have it done in the same visit as the mow.
Yes. Scheduled mowing for Evatt rentals, end-of-lease tidy-ups and pre-sale garden work while a long-held home is on the market are all routine for our operators. We only need access to the yard, and we can send photos when we are done.
Call 1800 369 669 or use the form on this page and a local Fox Mowing ACT operator will call you back the same day. For a standard Evatt mow they can usually quote from the street without you having to be there.
