This was the first suburb in Belconnen to be settled, back in 1967, and the planners left a large share of the original eucalypts in place. Add Black Mountain Nature Park along Caswell Drive and the bushland along the southern boundary, and you have a suburb where the lawn and the bush are never far apart.
The street names come from Aboriginal tribal groups around Australia, and the suburb itself takes its name from the Arrernte people of Central Australia. Bandjalong Crescent, the bell-shaped main street, carries most of the traffic, with the primary schools, churches and the local shops sitting in the middle of the curve. Postcode 2614 covers a compact 160 hectares, so our operators tend to know it street by street: which blocks are all fescue under a canopy, which have a south-facing bank that never dries out, and which front lawns get baked once the afternoon sun swings over Bindubi Street.
