Estate lawns on the last street before the border
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Dunlop, the suburb at the far north-west corner of Canberra, about 11.6 kilometres from the city and hard up against the New South Wales border. It was built out estate by estate, from the early sections of around 50 houses to the later Ginninderra Ponds development, with each entrance carrying its own sign, and the lawns follow the same pattern: builder-laid turf, mostly soft-leaf buffalo on the newer streets, on blocks that were open farmland not long ago. The Fassifern land was rated some of the best wheat-growing country in the district until the late 1990s, which tells you the ground can grow things once it is treated properly.
The suburb is named after Sir Ernest Edward Dunlop, the wartime surgeon, and the streets after inventors, inventions and artists; there is an Akubra Place, a Lance Hill Avenue for the man who built the Hills hoist, and a Victa Place named after the lawn mower, which our operators enjoy more than most. The 2016 Census put the median age at 33 with a quarter of residents under 15, so these are family lawns that get kicked on, camped on and run across, next to something like eight playgrounds and the walking paths around West Belconnen Ponds and the Dunlop Grasslands Nature Reserve. Postcode 2615 stretches from Charnwood to the reserve fence, and we work the lot.
