The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT works the quiet, established streets of Cook, a 1968 suburb of just under 3,000 people where the gardens have had more than half a century to grow up around the lawns.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Cook, one of the earliest suburbs in Belconnen, established in 1968 between Aranda and Macquarie. It is a small place, 1.7 square kilometres and a population of just under 3,000, named jointly for Captain James Cook and Sir Joseph Cook, the sixth Prime Minister, with streets that carry the names of notable women from Australian history. The point about a suburb this age is simple: the trees planted when the houses went up are now full size, and a lawn that was in full sun in 1970 may spend most of today in shade.
That changes what grows and how we cut it. The old couch and kikuyu lawns still hold the sunny front yards, but under the big trees they have been replaced or overtaken by tall fescue, which wants a higher cut and keeps growing through winter. Beds have thickened up, hedges have got tall, and a fair few blocks have a bank at the back that has never been easy to mow. The local shops, with the Cook Grocer, Little Oink and the To All My Friends bar, sit near the Cook Community Hub on the site of the old primary school, and the operator covering postcode 2614 will usually pass them several times a day.
Book your free Cook quoteFrom the streets around the Cook school park to the Bindubi Street edge, we set the cut for the grass, the shade and the slope in front of us.
Fortnightly or monthly visits through the warm months, with winter cuts where fescue keeps growing under the trees. Inclusions are on the lawn mowing and lawn edging pages.
Fifty years of canopy means a lot of Cook grass never sees midday sun. We keep tall fescue at 50 mm or above, clear leaf before we cut, and tell you honestly when a corner has gone too dark for turf.
An original 1960s couch lawn can be thin, thatchy and full of Poa by now. Coring, top dressing and overseeding in autumn give it another decade without ripping it out.
The exotic trees planted in the early years drop heavily in April and May. We rake, blow and remove the leaf so the lawn goes into winter breathing, and can clear the gutters while we are there; see gutter cleaning.
When a long-held Cook home changes hands, the garden is usually the biggest job on the list. A pre-sale clean-up gets fifty years of growth back under control before the photographer arrives.
Bright green Poa tufts in a dormant couch lawn and dandelions along the kerb are the two winter tell-tales here. Our lawn weeds and dandelion guides explain how we treat them.
Cook gardens have history in them. Hedges planted in the 1970s are now head-high walls, ornamental trees have outgrown the beds they were put in, and there is usually a corner that has been quietly reverting to whatever seeds itself. Our operators do hedging and pruning, bed weeding, garden clean-ups and mulching from $70 a visit, and take the green waste with them.
The work in an older suburb is more about restraint than replacement. Bringing a tall hedge back a metre without leaving it bare, thinning a shrub that has swallowed a path, refreshing mulch under trees where nothing else will grow. We do a lot of this for residents who have kept the same garden for decades and want it maintained rather than redesigned, and for families sorting out a parent’s home before it goes to market with a pre-sale tidy.

Important: Cook guide prices only. Tree cover, leaf volume, a steep back yard and how often the round is booked all feed into the final quote.
In a suburb this established, the garden tells us more than the block size does.
Operators who already work this side of Belconnen and know a fescue lawn from a couch one at a glance.
The operator quoting your yard works Cook, Aranda, Macquarie and Hawker every week, and knows which streets are all shade and which still bake in the afternoon.
A small kept lawn from $50, a garden visit from $70. Larger, steeper or long-neglected jobs are quoted on what is actually there.
Every Fox Mowing ACT operator is fully insured and holds a police check, which matters for older residents and for families managing a relative’s home.
Edges cut, leaf removed, paths and drive blown clean, green waste gone. The block looks kept from the street.
Regular rounds, one-off visits or a seasonal plan, booked around appointments and family visits rather than the other way round.
Call 1800 FOX MOW or use the form. A standard Cook front-and-back mow can usually be priced from the street.
Winter in Cook is a two-speed affair. Out in the open front yards the couch and kikuyu go brown with the first May frosts and stay that way until October, while under the trees the fescue keeps growing slowly and wants a cut every few weeks. Spring’s heavy September and October rain lands on soil that has not yet warmed past the mid-teens, so the growth surge comes a fortnight later than people expect and then all at once. Summer is where the canopy pays off: shaded lawns hold moisture through the hot westerlies far better than the exposed ones, though every lawn still needs deep watering before 9 am under the ACT daylight-saving rules. Autumn is the big month here, with the exotic trees dropping their leaves onto a lawn that is enjoying its second growth flush; it is the time to feed, to overseed the fescue and to top dress the thin patches before the frosts return in late April.
We mow right across Belconnen — Cook, Aranda, Macquarie, Hawker, Bruce, Belconnen, Evatt, Florey, Giralang, Charnwood and Fraser — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
Small, well-kept lawns in Cook start from $50. A typical front-and-back mow with edges and blow-down on one of the original 1968 blocks is usually $70 to $150+, gardening starts from $70 a visit, and a lawn that has been left through a season is quoted as a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local operator confirms the price on site.
Because the trees have grown and the grass has not kept up. Cook was established in 1968, and trees planted then now shade lawns that were laid as full-sun couch or kikuyu. Those grasses thin out in shade no matter what you do. Tall fescue handles it, mown at 50 mm or higher, and where a corner gets almost no sun the honest fix is mulch or a shade bed rather than more turf.
Yes. A normal Cook visit includes blowing or raking the leaf off the lawn before cutting and clearing the drive and paths afterwards. A heavy April drop from a big deciduous tree can become a clean-up in its own right, and if that is the case we will quote it separately and say so up front.
That is common work for us in Cook. Tall hedges brought back in stages, shrubs thinned, beds weeded and re-mulched, green waste removed, all from $70 a visit, with the aim of keeping the character of a fifty-year-old garden rather than starting again.
Yes. A lot of long-held Cook homes change hands each year, and we do the pre-sale garden tidy, lawn recovery and ongoing mowing while a property is listed. We only need access to the yard and can send photos when the job is done.
Phone 1800 369 669 or complete the form on this page and a local Fox Mowing ACT operator will call you the same day. For a standard Cook mow they can often give a price from the street without you being home.
