The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens across Hawker, from the family blocks around Hawker Primary and Belconnen High to the motel, shops and takeaways at the group centre, in a suburb built around its ovals, bowling greens and softball diamonds.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Hawker, and it is fair to say this suburb knows what good turf looks like. Established in 1972 and named for Charles Hawker, a federal member from 1929 to 1938, it has the Hawker Playing Fields, the enclosed oval at Robertfam Park, tennis and lawn bowls centres and the Hawker International Softball Centre inside its 1.9 square kilometres. The streets are named after Northern Territory pastoral stations, and the blocks between them are classic early-1970s family yards: generous, mostly couch and kikuyu, and shaded here and there by trees that have had half a century to grow.
The group centre is the other half of the picture. Small businesses, takeaways, a newsagent, a hairdresser, a restaurant and a motel all keep frontages that need to look presentable seven days a week, and three schools, Hawker Primary, Belconnen High and Hawker College, cover everyone from preschool to year 12. So an operator working postcode 2614 moves between a back yard that has been used as a cricket pitch all summer, a nature strip outside a shop, and a retired couple’s garden that has been kept the same way since the house was new, and each of those wants something slightly different from the mower.

Fortnightly or monthly rounds through the season with edges along kerbs, paths and beds every time, and winter cuts where fescue keeps growing. See the lawn mowing and lawn edging pages for inclusions.
Hawker yards are generous and the trees on them are now full size. We mow old couch and kikuyu at a steady height, keep the fescue under the canopy at 50 mm, and handle the leaf that comes with a mature garden.
The group centre lives on first impressions. A fixed-interval round for the nature strip, entry beds and hedges, invoiced monthly, keeps a business frontage tidy; see commercial garden maintenance.
In a suburb this sporty the backyard gets used. Worn patches and bare goal-mouths get a higher cut, an autumn feed and top dressing so they thicken up instead of turning to dust.
Hot north-westerlies in January dry an open Hawker lawn in days. We lift the cut, set up drought protection in spring and explain the deep, early watering that works within the ACT daytime sprinkler rules.
Fifty-year-old kikuyu runs over everything. A bladed edge every visit and targeted treatment on the runners keep it in the lawn and out of the beds, without spraying the whole yard.
Hawker gardens were planted in the early 1970s and a good many have been looked after by the same people ever since, so the work is about keeping them in proportion: hedging and pruning that brings a boundary hedge back to a height you can see over, thinning shrubs that have swallowed a path, and a full garden clean-up where a corner behind the shed has gone its own way. Gardening visits start at $70 and the green waste goes with us.
For the businesses at the group centre we do the same on a smaller scale and a fixed schedule: entry beds weeded and mulched, hedges squared off, the strip out the front kept clear. For families sorting out a parent’s home before it goes to market, a pre-sale tidy and a recovered lawn make an old Hawker garden look cared for rather than tired, and we keep it that way through the campaign.

Important: Hawker guide prices only. Lawn size, how hard the turf has been used, tree cover, a commercial schedule or a one-off visit all feed into the final quote.
In Hawker the state of the turf matters as much as its size, so we look before we price.
Local operators who already work Hawker, Higgins and Scullin and answer their own phones.
Our operators cover Hawker, Higgins, Scullin, Cook and Aranda, so the one who quotes you knows which streets back onto the playing fields and which shops need the strip done before opening.
From $50 for a small kept lawn and $70 for a garden visit; larger, worn or commercial jobs quoted to the work involved before we start.
Every Fox Mowing ACT operator is fully insured and police-checked, which is what a business owner, a landlord or a long-time resident wants on file.
Edges cut, kikuyu trimmed off the paths, drive and shopfront blown clean, green waste gone; the place looks kept from the street.
Regular rounds, one-off catch-ups or seasonal plans, timed before the shops open or around the school pick-up at Hawker Primary.
Call 1800 FOX MOW or use the form; a standard Hawker mow or a single shop frontage can usually be priced from the street.
Hawker’s couch and kikuyu lawns go straw-coloured after the first May frosts and stay that way through the hard frosts of June to August; a brown backyard in July is not sick, it is dormant, and the fescue under the older trees is the only thing still growing. Spring’s heaviest rain lands in September and October, the soil finally passes 14 degrees in mid-October, and the old kikuyu takes off, which is when a fortnightly round stops being optional. Summer is cricket season on the back lawn and the hot north-westerlies arrive with it, so we mow higher, water deep before 9 am under the ACT daylight-saving rule and keep the drought treatment topped up. Autumn brings the second flush and the moment to feed with potassium before the late-April frosts, and to seed or re-turf the pitch that got worn to dirt over the holidays.
We mow right across Belconnen — Hawker, Higgins, Scullin, Cook, Aranda, Florey, Flynn, Fraser, Charnwood, Dunlop and Bruce — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
A small, well-kept Hawker lawn starts from $50. A full early-1970s family block with edges and a blow-down is usually $70 to $150+, gardening visits start from $70, a shop frontage at the group centre is quoted per visit on a schedule, and an overgrown yard is a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local operator checks the turf and confirms the number with you before starting.
Yes. The takeaways, newsagent, hairdresser, restaurant and motel at the Hawker group centre all keep frontages that need to look tidy seven days a week, and we run fixed-interval rounds for nature strips, entry beds and hedges, invoiced monthly, with visits timed before opening. Every operator is insured and police-checked.
Let it grow, feed it and top dress it. Bare, compacted patches on a Hawker couch or kikuyu lawn recover best if the cut is raised for a few weeks, the ground is cored in March or April, a potassium-rich feed goes on before the frosts and a thin top dressing with seed fills the worn spots. If the damage is deep, new warm-season turf laid between late November and February is the quicker fix.
Yes. Boundary hedges planted in Hawker in the 1970s are often well above head height, and our operators bring them back in stages, thin overgrown shrubs, weed and mulch the beds and remove the green waste, all from $70 a visit and usually in the same trip as the mow.
Watering and cut height, mostly. The sports turf in Hawker is watered deeply and often; a home lawn that gets a light sprinkle each evening dries out in the first run of hot north-westerlies. Deep watering two or three times a week before 9 am, a higher summer cut so the grass shades its own roots, and a wetting agent in spring will get a couch or kikuyu lawn through January looking like it belongs in the suburb.
Phone 1800 369 669 or complete the form on this page and a local Fox Mowing ACT operator will ring you back the same day. A standard Hawker mow or a single shop frontage can usually be priced from the street without a site meeting.
