Smaller 1980s blocks on what used to be sheep paddock

Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Florey, a suburb that was gazetted on 5 August 1975 but mostly built in the mid-1980s, with 571 sites started in 1984 and the bulk of the housing finished by the end of 1987. Before that it was roughly 250 hectares of undulating open paddock used for sheep agistment, with hardly a tree on it apart from a pine plantation in the north-east corner and a line of eucalypts in the south-east. Everything green in Florey today has been planted since, and it shows in gardens that are established but not old, and in trees that are finally big enough to matter.

Florey was planned as predominantly medium-density housing, so the blocks are tighter than the 1960s suburbs next door, with duplexes, government housing throughout and two small developments built for older residents. The whole suburb slopes north towards Ginninderra Creek, which is why the 2018 Healthy Waterways work along Tattersall Crescent turned a concrete drain back into something like a creek. Named for Howard Florey, who shared the 1945 Nobel Prize for penicillin, with streets named after Australian scientists, postcode 2615 has its own shops on the corner of Kesteven Street and Ratcliffe Crescent, three schools and a Hindu temple, and our operators pass most of them on a normal day.

What we do in Florey

Mowing services for Florey’s tighter blocks

A duplex lawn off Pawsey Circuit and a corner block on Barnard Circuit are different jobs, and we price and plan them that way.

Regular mowing & edging

Fortnightly or monthly rounds through the growing season, edges cut along kerbs, paths and beds, every visit. The lawn mowing and lawn edging pages show what comes with each visit.

Duplex and medium-density lawns

Florey was planned for medium density, so a lot of lawns are a front strip and a modest back yard. We price a small lawn as a small lawn, get it done quickly and keep the neighbours’ side neat too.

Blocks that slope to the creek

The suburb falls away north towards Ginninderra Creek, and plenty of yards have a grade on them. The high side dries out first in summer and the low side stays soggy in winter, so we adjust height, timing and the whipper snipper work to suit.

Rentals and managed properties

With government housing across the suburb and a solid rental market close to the town centre, we run scheduled rounds for agents and landlords and do the end-of-lease clean-up between tenants, photos included.

Feeding forty-year-old turf

Lawns laid in the 1980s are starting to thin. A mid-October and February feed for couch and buffalo, or September and March for fescue, thickens them up without re-laying.

Winter grass and weeds

Poa shows up as bright green tufts in a dormant couch lawn every June, and clover fills the gaps by spring. A September pre-emergent and a spot spray are the answer; our lawn weeds guide covers both.

Gardening services Florey

Gardening for gardens planted in the 1980s

Florey gardens are at an interesting age. The hedges and shrubs put in around 1985 are fully grown and need firm shaping, the feature trees are now casting real shade over beds planted for full sun, and the original mulch and edging gave up years ago. Our operators handle hedging and pruning, weeding, garden clean-ups and green waste removal from $70 a visit, on blocks big and small.

Because the ground here was open paddock with few trees, the soil in the beds is only as good as what has been added to it, and a proper layer of mulch in spring is the cheapest improvement most Florey gardens can get. We do a lot of low-maintenance tidy-ups for older residents who want the garden kept rather than expanded, and regular light visits for the units and duplexes near the shops where a small garden needs to stay presentable without much effort from anyone.

What changes your Florey quote?

Medium-density planning means Florey quotes come down to a few practical questions.

✓Lawn size A duplex front strip and a corner block with a big nature strip are priced very differently, and both exist on the same street.
✓Slope Yards that fall towards the creek mean more whipper snipper time on the banks and a slower mow.
✓Regular or one-off A standing schedule keeps each visit short and the price steady across the season.

Why Florey locals book Fox Mowing ACT

Operators who already work Florey and the suburbs around the town centre, not a call centre.

Locals close to the town centre

Our operators cover Florey, Belconnen, Latham, Scullin, Higgins and Melba, so the one quoting your lawn has probably mowed on your street already.

Prices set before we start

From $50 for a small kept lawn, $70 for a gardening visit, with overgrown or awkward jobs quoted to what is really there.

Insured and police-checked

Every Fox Mowing ACT operator is fully insured and police-checked, which is what housing providers, agents and older residents want on record.

A clean finish on a small block

On a tight block every edge shows, so we cut them properly, blow the paths and take the clippings away.

Scheduled around your day

Regular rounds, one-off visits or seasonal plans, fitted around shifts, school runs to St John the Apostle or Florey Primary, and inspection dates.

Seasonal lawn support

The Florey lawn year on sloping, open ground

Florey’s original lack of tree cover still tells in winter: frost from May to September sits hard on the open lawns, the couch and buffalo go brown, and the fescue that has been sown on the shadier sides keeps growing and wants the odd cut. The slope towards Ginninderra Creek means the low ends of the suburb hold cold air and moisture longer, so the last frost there can run into late September. Spring rain is the year’s heaviest and the soil warms past the mid-teens in mid-October, after which growth on a 1980s couch lawn is fast. Summer brings the north-westerlies across the high side of the suburb; we mow higher and keep watering deep and early under the ACT daylight-saving rule. Autumn is when we thicken thinning turf with a feed and top dressing, and where a lawn is past saving we lay new turf in late spring once the ground is warm enough for it to root.

We mow right across Belconnen — Florey, Belconnen, Latham, Scullin, Higgins, Melba, Flynn, Evatt, Charnwood, Dunlop and Cook — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.

My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Florey lawn and garden questions, answered

How much does lawn mowing in Florey cost?

Small, maintained lawns in Florey start from $50, and that covers a lot of the duplex and unit lawns here. A full block with edges and blow-down is typically $70 to $150+, gardening visits start from $70, and an overgrown yard, often at a change of tenant, is quoted as a recovery job from $100 to $250+. The local operator confirms the figure on site.

Why does the bottom of my Florey yard stay wet and frosty when the top is dry?

Because Florey slopes north to Ginninderra Creek, and cold air and water both run downhill. The low end of a sloping block holds frost later into September and stays damp through winter, while the high end dries out first in summer. We mow the wet end higher and later in the day, keep the whipper snipper off soft ground, and suggest a core and top dressing if the low side has compacted.

Are Florey blocks small enough to qualify for the $50 mow?

Many are. Florey was planned as predominantly medium-density housing in the 1980s, so duplex strips, unit lawns and small front-and-back yards are common and a good number of them fall into the small maintained lawn price from $50. If yours is one of them we will say so rather than charge you for a bigger block.

Do you shape hedges and clean up garden beds in Florey?

Yes. Florey hedges planted in the mid-1980s are now full-sized and need regular shaping, and our operators do that along with weeding, pruning, mulching and green waste removal from $70 a visit, usually in the same trip as the mow.

Can you handle mowing for a Florey rental or a housing provider?

Yes. We run scheduled rounds for landlords, agents and housing providers across Florey, do end-of-lease clean-ups between tenants, and send photos afterwards. Access to the yard is all we need.

How do I get a Florey quote?

Phone 1800 369 669 or send the form on this page and a local Fox Mowing ACT operator will ring you back the same day. Most Florey lawns are small enough to price from the street without a site visit.
