One of Belconnen’s first suburbs, and lawns to match
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Higgins, a suburb gazetted on 6 June 1968, the same day as Bruce, and built out from 1969 as one of the earliest parts of Belconnen. It is named for Henry Bournes Higgins, the politician and judge, and every street carries a judge’s name. At 1.7 square kilometres it is small, quiet and, for a mowing operator, very consistent: original late-1960s blocks, lawns that started as couch or kikuyu more than fifty years ago, and trees that were planted with the houses and now dominate them.
Higgins has lost some of its own facilities over the years. The primary school and preschool have closed, and the supermarket built in 1968 was reported abandoned by 2024, so residents lean on the group centre in neighbouring Hawker and the shops in Florey and Latham. What the suburb has kept is its gardens. Blocks in postcode 2615 tend to be in long-term hands, with hedges, shrubs and shade trees that have been maintained for decades, and a good number are now being passed on, sold or rented out, which is when a lawn that has been quietly kept by one person for forty years suddenly needs someone else to understand it.
