The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT covers Giralang's mid-1970s streets on the eastern edge of Belconnen, between Baldwin Drive, Gundaroo Drive and the Barton Highway, where the star-named streets sit on a mix of low creek ground and firmer rises.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Giralang, a suburb whose name is the Wiradjuri word for star and whose streets are named for Aboriginal star words, astronomers and the constellations of the southern sky. It was gazetted on 15 January 1974 and built through the middle of that decade, which puts most of its lawns at about fifty years old: original couch and kikuyu on family-sized blocks, with fescue creeping in where the trees planted in 1975 now throw shade. At 599 metres and 2.4 square kilometres, it is bounded by Baldwin Drive, Gundaroo Drive and the Barton Highway, with Kaleen, Lawson and McKellar on the Belconnen side and Nicholls and Crace just over the highway.
The ground under Giralang is more varied than most Belconnen suburbs. Ginninderra Creek runs along a fault line marked at the surface by an iron-oxide reef, and the suburb is built over bands of shale, sandstone and mudstone rather than one uniform clay, so a lawn near the creek and a lawn on the rise by the Giralang District Playing Fields can drain, freeze and dry out quite differently. Giralang Primary School, which the community kept open after the 2006 closure threat, and the playing fields next to it are the centre of things, and postcode 2617 is a regular round for our operators rather than an occasional call-out.
Book your free Giralang quoteFrom the blocks along Baldwin Drive to the streets closest to the creek, the visit is set for the soil under the lawn as much as the grass on top.
Scheduled fortnightly or monthly visits October to April with kerb, path and bed edges every time, and a lighter winter round where fescue keeps growing. Inclusions are listed on the lawn mowing and lawn edging pages.
Giralang yards were laid out for families, and fifty years on they still are. Old couch and kikuyu with thatch in it, a rise at the back, a big nature strip out front; we mow the lot at the right height and keep the runners off the paths.
Valley floors are frost hollows, and the streets nearest the creek hold cold air and moisture longest. We stay off frosted turf, mow the damp end later in the day and core it in spring so it stops puddling; see soil conditioning.
Corners on Baldwin Drive and Gundaroo Drive carry a lot of verge. We mow and edge the nature strip as part of the visit, not as an afterthought, so the whole frontage reads as kept.
A dormant couch lawn leaves gaps every winter, and bindii and clover fill them by spring. A late-May pre-emergent and a spring follow-up sort it; the bindii and clover guides explain the timing.
Worn goal-mouths and dead patches on fifty-year-old lawns get top dressing and seed in autumn, or new warm-season turf laid between late November and February once the soil is warm enough to take it.
Giralang gardens carry the plantings of the mid-1970s: hedges that have become walls, shrubs that have outgrown their beds, a feature tree that now shades half the back yard. Our operators handle hedging and pruning, weeding, garden clean-ups and green waste removal from $70 a visit, and they know how to bring an overgrown hedge back in stages so it does not end up bare.
On the varied ground here, mulch does two jobs: on the sandier rises it holds water through the summer westerlies, and on the heavier creek-side beds it keeps the surface from setting like concrete. We lay it in October before the heat rather than in January after the damage is done. For families selling a long-held Giralang home, or landlords with a tenant moving out, a pre-sale or end-of-lease tidy covers the lawn, beds, hedges and verge in one visit.

Guide prices apply from Baldwin Drive to the highway; the local operator confirms the figure once they have seen the block and the ground it is on. The full pricing guide has the rest.
| Lawn service | Guide price from | Typical inclusions |
|---|---|---|
| Small maintained lawn — mow, edge & blow | From $50 | Small, regularly mown lawns with clear access and no thatch build-up. |
| Medium to large — mow, edges & blow | From $70-$150+ | Front, back and nature strip mown, edges cut, fence lines trimmed and hard surfaces blown down. |
| Gardening basic visit | From $70 | Overgrown hedges brought back, pruning, weeding, mulch and green waste removal, priced to the garden. |

| Acreage / ride-on / slashing | Quoted on site | Larger open areas beside the playing fields or the creek corridor that suit a ride-on are priced on the spot. |
Important: Giralang guide prices only. Lawn area including the verge, thatch, soil condition, slope and how often you book all go into the final quote.
A look at the block, and the ground under it, sets a fair price.
Operators who already work the Kaleen, Giralang and McKellar streets and know the ground.
Our operators cover Giralang, Kaleen, Lawson, McKellar and Crace, so the person quoting your lawn knows which streets sit on the creek flats and which are up on the rise.
Small kept lawns from $50, gardening from $70, with overgrown, waterlogged or corner-block jobs priced to what is really there, before we start.
Every Fox Mowing ACT operator is fully insured and police-checked, which is what long-time residents, landlords and agents want to hear.
Nature strip mown, edges cut, drive and paths blown, clippings removed; the block looks kept from Baldwin Drive.
Regular rounds, one-off visits or seasonal plans, fitted around school runs to Giralang Primary and commutes along the Barton Highway.
Call 1800 FOX MOW or use the form; a standard Giralang front-and-back can usually be priced from the street.
Giralang’s winter is sharpest on the low ground. Cold air pools along the Ginninderra Creek corridor, so the streets nearest it hold frost from May right into late September while the rises thaw sooner; the couch and kikuyu go brown across the whole suburb either way, and the fescue under the trees keeps ticking over. Spring’s heavy September and October rain sits longest on the creek-side lawns and drains fast off the sandier rises, and the soil does not warm past 14 degrees until mid-October, when growth arrives all at once. Summer’s hot north-westerlies dry the exposed nature strips first, so we mow higher and keep watering deep and before 9 am under the ACT daylight-saving rules. Autumn is the second flush and the right time to feed before the late-April frosts and, where a patch has gone, to seed it or plan new turf for the following spring.
We mow right across Belconnen — Giralang, Kaleen, Lawson, McKellar, Crace, Nicholls, Evatt, Bruce, Belconnen, Cook, Aranda and Charnwood — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
Small, well-kept Giralang lawns start from $50. A full mid-1970s family block, including the nature strip, with edges and a blow-down is usually $70 to $150+, gardening starts from $70 a visit, and a lawn that has run wild over summer is quoted as a recovery job from $100 to $250+. Once a local operator has seen the block and the verge, they confirm the figure before any work starts.
Because Giralang has low ground along Ginninderra Creek, and valley floors are frost hollows. Cold air and water both settle there, so creek-side lawns can carry frost into late September and stay damp through winter. The answer is patience with the mowing, staying off frozen turf, coring in spring so water drains rather than pools, and choosing tall fescue or a well-fed couch that copes with a slow, cold start.
Yes, the verge is part of the visit. Corner blocks along Baldwin Drive and Gundaroo Drive in Giralang carry a lot of nature strip, and we mow and edge it with the rest of the lawn so the whole frontage looks kept. It is included in the quote rather than added afterwards.
We can. Hedges planted in Giralang in the 1970s are often well above head height by now, and our operators bring them down in stages, prune, weed and mulch the beds, and remove the green waste, all from $70 a visit and usually in the same trip as the mow.
Yes. Scheduled mowing for Giralang rental properties, end-of-lease clean-ups and pre-sale garden tidy-ups are all routine work for our operators. We only need access to the yard, and photos can be sent when the job is done.
Ring 1800 369 669 or fill in the form on this page and a local Fox Mowing ACT operator will call you back the same day. Most Giralang mows can be priced from the street, so you do not need to be home.
