The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT mows the compact blocks of Crace, from the streets named for colonial parishes near the Barton Highway to the homes that back onto Gungaderra Grasslands nature reserve.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Crace, a compact suburb of 1.7 square kilometres wedged between the Barton Highway, Gundaroo Drive, Nudurr Drive and Gungahlin Drive. It is named after Edward Kendall Crace, an original settler in the Gungahlin area, and its streets take their names from colonial-era parishes and land divisions. Roads went in from July 2008, 21 display homes were finished by May 2009, half the houses were up by mid-2012 and the suburb was essentially complete by 2015. More than 1,600 dwellings were built on 140 hectares against a plan for 1,500, which tells you how tight the blocks are.
Defence Housing Australia and Canberra Investment Corporation developed Crace, and some very small blocks were released for lower-cost housing alongside the rest, so there are a lot of short front lawns, side strips and rental properties that change hands. The ground is lighter and rockier than the clay to the east, and the suburb also holds Gungahlin Hill with its radio transmitters and part of Gungaderra Grasslands nature reserve. Our operators in the 2911 postcode know the lawns here are small, exposed and quick to dry, and they price and mow them that way.
Book your free Crace quoteFrom a Defence Housing rental near Nudurr Drive to a family home under Gungahlin Hill, each visit is scaled to a small lawn on light ground.
Fortnightly through the growing season with edges along paths, kerbs and beds; a small Crace lawn is often done in under half an hour. See lawn mowing and edging.
Some Crace blocks were released deliberately small. We price a strip as a strip and keep it sharp, because on a tight block the edges are most of what the street sees.
Tenants come and go. Scheduled rounds for property managers, plus end-of-lease tidy-ups that get the yard back to hand-over standard.
Crace’s lighter ground drains fast and starves a lawn by midsummer. Compost, wetting agent and a higher cut hold water where the roots are; our soil conditioning page explains.
With Gungaderra Grasslands and open verges next door, seed blows in constantly. A late-May bindii pre-emergent and a spring broadleaf plan keep bare feet safe in summer.
The Barton Highway edge of Crace is open and west-facing. We cut higher from November, and drought protection before the first heatwave makes a visible difference.
A Crace garden is usually a narrow bed along a fence, a screening hedge for privacy from the neighbour three metres away, and a few pots. Fox Mowing ACT operators do hedging and pruning, weeding, bed clean-ups, mulching and green waste removal from $70, and on a block this size it is normally added to the mowing visit rather than booked separately.
Privacy hedges are the big one. On small blocks they are planted close and expected to do a lot, so they need shaping two or three times a season while young to stay thick at the base. Beds on Crace’s light soil dry out fast, and a coarse mulch put down before November keeps the plants alive through the westerlies. For the many rentals in the suburb we keep gardens to a simple, photographable standard between tenants, and because Crace is a cat containment suburb with native planting near the grasslands, we prune with the plants’ health in mind.

Crace’s small blocks mean a lot of lawns sit at the bottom of our price range, but the operator still confirms on site. The full pricing guide covers everything beyond mowing.

Important: These are Crace starting guide prices. The final quote depends on lawn size, grass height, side access on a narrow block and how often we visit.
On a small block the details decide the price, so we look before we quote.
Operators who work the south of the district and know a small Crace block inside out.
Our Crace operators also cover Palmerston, Nicholls, Franklin, Kaleen and Giralang, so the person quoting knows the light soil and the highway-side exposure.
Small maintained lawns from $50, gardening from $70, and larger or overgrown jobs quoted to the work, not the postcode.
Fully insured, police-checked operators on every job, which property managers with Defence Housing stock ask about first.
On a compact block the edges are the finish. Trimming and a blow-down are standard on every visit.
Fortnightly, monthly or once-off, fitted around commutes up Gungahlin Drive and tenancy changeovers.

Crace is low for the district at about 611 metres, but it is open, and the seasons arrive without much tree cover to soften them. Frost sits on the lawns from May to September and the buffalo goes to straw; a fescue strip keeps growing slowly and wants a cut every few weeks. September and October bring the wettest weather of the year and the green-up, and once the soil passes the mid-teens in mid-October the first feed goes down. Summer is the hard part on light soil: hot westerlies off the highway side dry a small lawn in days, so we mow higher, water deep and early, and stick to the ACT rule of no sprinklers between 9am and 6pm during daylight saving. Autumn gives a second growth flush and a potassium feed before the late-April frosts, which is also the last chance to overseed a fescue lawn before winter.
We mow right across the Gungahlin district — Crace, Palmerston, Nicholls, Franklin, Gungahlin, Harrison, Mitchell, Casey, Amaroo, Bonner and Forde — and across the wider Gungahlin area. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
Lawn mowing in Crace starts from $50 for a small, regularly maintained lawn, and because Crace blocks are compact a good share of them sit near that figure. Larger blocks with edges and a blow-down run $70 to $150+, gardening starts from $70, and an overgrown yard is a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local operator settles the exact price with you on the day.
Crace lawns sit on lighter, rockier ground than the heavy clay found across much of Gungahlin, so they drain fast and dry out early in summer. Under the topsoil the suburb is a mix of shale, mudstone, siltstone and dacite around Gungahlin Hill and Crace Hill. Compost and wetting agent worked in, a higher summer cut and deep watering before 9am are what keep a Crace buffalo lawn green through a hot westerly.
Yes, and it is often the cheapest kind of job we do in Crace, from $50 for a small kept lawn. Some Crace blocks were released deliberately small, and a strip of lawn plus edges can be done quickly on a regular round; the point is the sharp edges and the tidy street front rather than the mowing itself.
Yes, Crace gardening starts from $70 a visit and includes hedge shaping, pruning, weeding, mulching, bed clean-ups and green waste removal. Privacy hedges on tight Crace blocks need two or three shapes a season while young, and we get mulch onto beds before the November heat.
Yes, Fox Mowing ACT keeps rental and Defence Housing yards in Crace on a scheduled round and can do an end-of-lease clean-up when tenants change. Operators are insured and police-checked, only need access to the yard, and can send photos to the property manager.
