Thirty years on, Amaroo lawns have settled in
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Amaroo, one of the older suburbs on the northern side of the Gungahlin district. It was gazetted on 18 October 1991 and settled from 1994, its name means ‘a beautiful place’ in Nyoongar, and its streets carry the names of Australian rivers and lakes: Shoalhaven Avenue, Burdekin Avenue and the rest. The suburb sits at about 638 metres, 1.4 kilometres from the Gungahlin Town Centre, boxed in by Mirrabei Drive, Horse Park Drive and Gundaroo Drive, with Ginninderra Creek along its south-eastern side. The 2021 census counted 6,129 people here, most of them in detached houses on proper family blocks in the 2914 postcode.
That age matters for the grass. An Amaroo lawn laid in the mid-1990s has had three decades of Canberra winters and dry summers, so it is often a mix by now: couch that came with the house, kikuyu that walked in from next door, tall fescue someone oversowed for winter colour. Trees planted when the streets were new are finally big enough to throw shade and drop leaves.
