Seasons on an exposed Moncrieff block
Moncrieff sits high at around 640 metres with little mature tree cover, so its lawns get the full Canberra year without much buffering. Buffalo and couch go dormant and lose colour once the frosts start in May, and stay that way until the soil warms past the mid-teens in October; the low side of a sloping block, where cold air pools, wakes up last. The spring rain peak in September and October pushes growth hard, and by November the north-westerlies arrive and the hill faces start drying out. Through summer that means deep watering two or three times a week before 9 am, inside the ACT rule of no sprinklers between 9 am and 6 pm during daylight saving, and a higher cut to shade the soil. A feed in mid-October and again in February suits the warm-season lawns, with a potassium-rich autumn feed before the late-April frosts to harden them off.
