Forde’s seasons, from wetland frost to reserve-side heat
Forde sits at the top of the Ginninderra Creek catchment with wetlands on the doorstep, and that shapes its winter more than anything. Cold air pools over the low ground near the creek headwaters, frosts arrive in May and hang around into September, and buffalo lawns go straw-coloured and stop while fescue keeps creeping along. Spring is wet, with September and October the year’s wettest months, and the clay stays cold until mid-October, when the first feed finally makes sense. Summer turns the other way: the westerlies cross the open reserve and hit the young, low-tree streets hard, so we mow high, recommend deep watering before 9am and keep to the ACT rule of no sprinklers between 9am and 6pm during daylight saving. Autumn is the second growth flush, the time for a potassium feed before the late-April frosts, and the last chance to overseed a fescue lawn before the cold. Our round shifts with all of that instead of running the same gap all year.
