The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
Fox Mowing ACT looks after Lawson's young lawns, from the first blocks sold in December 2013 to the Lawson North area set aside for Defence families, all within a short walk of Lake Ginninderra.
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Lawson, the newest suburb in this part of Belconnen. Its first residential land was sold on 3 December 2013, after development was held up for about two years by Commonwealth environmental checks on the native grassland and its golden sun moths. The suburb takes its name from Henry Lawson, and its streets are named after aspects of Australia that appear in his stories and poems. It sits at about 605 metres between Baldwin Drive, Gundaroo Drive and Ginninderra Drive, with a bike path along the Ginninderra Drive side and another along the shore of Lake Ginninderra. Not to be confused with other same-named places elsewhere in Australia.
Because nearly everything here has been built since 2014, the lawns are young: mostly soft-leaf buffalo laid by builders on the thinner soils new estates tend to get, with little tree cover yet to soften the afternoon sun. That combination makes Lawson lawns quick to stress in a hot, dry January and quick to recover with the right care. Defence Housing Australia’s plan for Lawson North adds another wave of new homes, so the mix of small courtyards, rental lawns and shared strata grounds keeps growing. Our operators know how a two-year-old lawn behaves differently from a fifty-year-old one, and mow accordingly.
Book your free Lawson quoteFrom a courtyard near the lake path to a family block off Gundaroo Drive, every Lawson visit is set for young grass on new ground.
Fortnightly rounds through the growing season and a lighter winter schedule, with clean edges on kerbs, paths and beds. Our lawn mowing and lawn edging pages describe a standard visit.
Most Lawson lawns are soft-leaf buffalo, which likes a higher cut and hates being scalped. We set the mower for buffalo, not for whatever was on the last block.
New-estate blocks are compact, and shared grounds are common. Courtyards are priced as courtyards, and common lawns go on a fixed schedule for the body corporate.
Lawson’s trees are still saplings, so lawns cop the hot north-westerlies head on. Higher summer cuts, deep early-morning watering and drought protection get them through.
Turf on a new build often goes in on thin soil and struggles. We can prepare the ground, lay new turf or condition the soil so the lawn actually takes.
Tenanted homes and Defence-family rentals need reliable, scheduled upkeep with no fuss. We invoice the agent or landlord and keep the place tidy between inspections.
Lawson gardens are a little over ten years old at most, and plenty are younger. That means builder-planted screening hedges that need shaping two or three times a growing season before they get leggy, narrow beds along fences, and young trees that still need protection from the wind. Our operators do hedging and pruning, weeding, mulching and clean-ups from $70 a visit, and take the green waste away.
A good mulch in October, before the first hot westerly, is the single most useful thing you can do for a young Lawson bed on thin soil. Beyond that, the work is steady rather than heavy: keeping hedges even, weeding gravel and bark beds, and giving investment properties a pre-sale or end-of-lease tidy when the tenants change. One operator handles lawn and garden in the same visit.

Operators who work Lawson, McKellar, Kaleen and Giralang every week and know a new-estate lawn when they see one.
Our Lawson crews cover the suburbs ringing Lake Ginninderra, so the person quoting knows how young lawns in the 2617 postcode handle heat and thin soil.
Small maintained lawns from $50, gardening from $70, and larger or overgrown jobs quoted before we start.
Every operator is fully insured and police-checked, which matters for tenanted homes, strata grounds and Defence-family rentals.
Edges, trimming and a blow-down are standard. A new home should look like a new home from the street.
Fortnightly, monthly or one-off, timed around work, the lake path run or an inspection date.

A young, open suburb feels the extremes. In summer, Lawson’s saplings offer no shade, so the buffalo lawns are among the first in the district to wilt when the north-westerlies blow and the January maximum pushes past 28 degrees. We mow higher, water deeply two or three mornings a week before the 9 am cut-off, and apply drought protection before the heatwaves rather than after. In winter the frosts run May to September and buffalo goes dormant and loses colour; that is normal, not a dead lawn. Spring rain in September and October and warming soil in mid-October bring it back, which is when we feed and, on the thin new-estate soils, top dress. Autumn is the second feed, and the right time to lay warm-season turf is late November to February once the ground is properly warm.
We mow right across Belconnen — Lawson, McKellar, Kaleen, Giralang, Bruce, Evatt, Florey, Flynn, Cook, Aranda, Charnwood and Dunlop among them — and across the wider Belconnen district. Nearby? Ask and we will sort a local operator.
The Fox Mowing gentleman was so polite and did a brilliant job on my yard. I have already recommended him to my neighbours.
They were very accommodating to my tight deadline for the initial work that I have decided to make it a permanent mowing job every fortnight. Our yard has never looked better. Great people, great experience. Would highly recommend them.
What a great company. Its really refreshing to get a mowing job done where you as a person feel looked after. Will use them again on an ongoing basis. Please try them, you will be glad you did.
My initial mowing job was quite a difficult task for the person from Fox Mowing as the grass was tall. However, the skill and patience he showed was admirable. He took his time and made sure that the yard was brought to its original glory days. Cannot recommend them highly enough. They truly are a cut above the rest.
Fox gave me a quote, made an arrangement, set the time and date, and was here on time and did what we discussed. Would use Fox again for sure.
Chris was very accommodating to my tight deadline. Extremely happy with both the customer service and the work undertaken.
Lawson lawn mowing starts from $50 for a small, maintained lawn, which covers many of the suburb's compact new-estate blocks. Larger lawns with edges and a blow-down are $70 to $150+, gardening starts at $70 a visit, and a lawn that has run wild is a recovery job from $100 to $250+. A local operator confirms the price before starting.
Usually because it is a young buffalo lawn on thin soil with no shade. Lawson was only developed from 2013, so the trees are small and the topsoil under builder-laid turf is often shallow, which means the lawn dries out fast in hot, dry north-westerly winds. Mow higher, water deeply before 9 am two or three times a week, and add organic matter or a wetting agent so the soil holds moisture.
For most Lawson blocks, yes: soft-leaf buffalo is what builders lay across the newer estates and it handles the summer heat well when kept a little longer. It does go dormant and lose colour in winter frosts, so if you want winter green on a shaded or south-facing side, tall fescue is the alternative.
Yes. Builder-planted screening hedges are the most common gardening job in Lawson and need trimming two or three times each growing season, and we also weed and mulch the narrow fence-line beds. Gardening visits start from $70 and are usually done with the mow.
Yes. Scheduled mowing and garden upkeep for rentals in Lawson, including homes let to Defence families, is regular work for our operators. We can invoice the agent or landlord and provide a tidy-up between tenancies.
