It was gazetted in May 1974 and takes its name from the pastoral property Thomas McQuoid was granted in 1835; the streets are named after Victorian state politicians. Bounded by Athllon Drive, Sulwood Drive, Erindale Drive and Taverner Street, and next door to Kambah, Greenway, Oxley, Monash, Gowrie and Fadden, Wanniassa (postcode 2903) has around 7,900 residents across 5.4 square kilometres, with a median age a few years older than Canberra as a whole.
Half a century on, that shows in the yards. Blocks are a proper size, gardens are established, and the trees planted in the first decade now throw real shade and real leaf litter. Most lawns are couch or kikuyu, often mixed, with fescue where a south-facing yard never quite gets the sun. The eastern half of the suburb sits on rhyodacite, the west on tuff and rhyolite, and both weather to soil that sets hard when it dries.
